When it comes to making movies with the LomoKino, there are many variables you can control and a few (like weather) that you can’t. Learn about the ones you can control here and you’ll be ready for when the unknown variables pop up!

  • Aperture

    SETTING THE APERTURE

The LomoKino has continuous aperture settings between f/5.6 and f/11. This means that you can smoothly adjust the aperture at any time as you shoot. Keep in mind, there’s no step between each aperture, so you may adjust the aperture setting at any time during shooting.

When to Shoot at a Larger Aperture ~ f/5.6

    - Indoors
    - When using a high sensitivity film (800, 1600 or 3200 ISO)
    - Any time you want your movie brighter

When to Shoot at a Smaller Aperture ~ f/11

    - Sunny day outdoors
    - When using 400 ISO film
    - Any time you want your movie darker

  • Focus

    FOCUSING

Setting the focus on the LomoKino is a breeze!

0.6m - 1m:If you’re subject is between 0.6 and 1 meter away, just press and hold the close-up button to maintain focus.
1m – Infinity: If you’re subject is further than 1 meter away, you don’t have to do a thing! The LomoKino is automatically set to this zone focus setting.

  • Hot

    USING THE HOT-SHOE AND FLASH

There is a hot-shoe located on top of the LomoKino, which works with loads of flashes. Here are some tips for using the hot-shoe and external flashes:

    - Use a high-end flash product (like the Lomography Fritz the Blitz 2.0 Flash) to achieve a short recharging time. (Many electronic flashes can’t recharge as fast as you can shoot.)
    - Use the flash to make stop motion photos — take each frame one by one until your flash is recharged.

  • Shooting

    SHOOTING THE MOVIE

To shoot with your LomoKino, just lock the advancing crank in position and turn it forward at your desired speed. The faster you turn the crank, the higher your movie frame rate will be — if you turn the advancing crank at full speed, you can reach 3-5 frames per second when filming! (Learn more about controlling the frame rate with the LomoKino here.)

  • REWINDING & UNLOADING YOUR FILM

You’ve shot your magnum opus and now it’s time to rewind the film and prepare it for development!
