There’s a new kid in town. If you see him on the street, don’t be shy, greet him, shake him by the hand –it’s the Smena 35mm, the newest member of the House of Smena. A quirky, little, lightweight plastic chap, straight out the LOMO St Petersburg production house.
The last ‘35’ rolled off the Lomo assembly line and became a part of Lomo history in 1995. However, our gallant Deadstock Hunters have got their hands on a limited number of these rare treasures. Unused and sitting pretty in original packaging, the Smena 35mm comes with a 2 year warranty.
The Smena ancestral line dates back to the early 1950s and was originally created by LOMO as a way to make photography accessible to young, hard-working Soviets. Cheap, portable and easy-enough-for-your-granny-to-use, the Smena was a hit with cash-strapped Russians back in the day.
The ‘35’ is the newer, funked-up model of the clan. Black with slick 80s lettering, the Smena 35mm looks like a bit of a dude. It shares all features you come to expect from a Smena; including Lomo 3 element, coated Triplet lens, nifty icon-based exposure guide, and fully manual aperture, shutter speed, and focal distance controls. Plus the quintessentially Lomo “B” setting allows you unlimited long exposure control! If multi-exposures are your thing then the ‘35’ is your boy.
The real jewel in the crown, however, is the handy flash hotshoe feature. The Smena is a star in all lights but secretly the ‘35’ loves nothing more than to be on the streets after dark. Slide on any flash and the night is yours for the snapping!
It was recently revealed to us by our all-knowing linguistic experts that the word Smena means ‘change of shift’. So what better camera could there be to have with you when the day changes to night? Or night turns to day? Or work into play?
The Smena 35mm is your perfect anytime compadre, light and easily slipped into your sack. The Smensky will feel like your new best friend. The Smena won’t rock up half an hour late then steal your last cigarette. It will not start a fight. The Smena won’t make you miss the bus. The Smena will not drink one too many tequilas and then need a piggy-back all the way home. No, no, no! Take the Smena 35 anywhere, anytime of the day, and it’s part of the posse. The ‘35’ is right there with you ripping up the dancefloor, enjoying a nice slice of cake at your great-aunt Bev’s tea party, scoffing a curry, capturing all the weird things that happen only on your nightshift or sharing the profound sadness of the first hour of work after the weekend.
After hanging around unused, untouched for years, the Smena 35 is READY TO GO! So take one, rip it out of its original packaging, hold it in your hands and liberate the euphoria for shooting that comes only from being stored in a box for over 10 years!
