Films

After 10 successful Kickstarter projects, we are back and almost ready to unleash our latest analog triumph – LomoChrome Metropolis – the first new color negative film in over 5 years. After tons of requests for our LomoChrome experimental film line (LomoChrome Purple and the latest LomoChrome Turquoise) we decided to release a completely new edition. The LomoChrome Metropolis will be available in 35 mm, 120 (medium format), 110 (pocket film) and 16mm (motion picture film). At its core lies a unique chemical formula that desaturates the colors, mutes the tones and makes the contrasts pop, specifically developed in our Lomography film manufactory.

Join us on Kickstarter to be among the first to shoot with this very limited film production (with an additional discount up to 25% on the final retail price). The first quantities of LomoChrome Metropolis will ship as early as February 2020.

To see the current list of available pledges and quantities please check the main Kickstarter page.

Building Metropolis

Curious about LomoChrome Metropolis’ production process? Here is how the idea became a reality:

  1. A Look Unlike Any Other. From the onset, our primary focus was first and foremost the look of the film. Our aim was to create a completely new look with a desaturated aesthetic reminiscent of old time movie theatres and photo books. We then set about reestablishing the abandoned processes of production that would be necessary to bring it to life.
  2. Overcoming challenges in film production. To recreate an entirely new film that possessed the very unique aesthetic we had in mind, we had firstly to overcome the challenge of finding the right chemical components, many of which no longer exist. The equipment to produce film is rare and nowadays the entire process of film production is extremely difficult. This is why there hasn’t been a new film released for many years. But, we overcame the hardest part, and sourced the specialist ingredients and tools we needed!
  3. Finding the Perfect Formula. Film is composed of an amalgamation of layers, some acting as chemical reactors while others suspend millions of light-sensitive silver halide crystals. With the ingredients we collected, we created a new composition, using new emulsion types in different layers and in new arrangements. This new film set-up produced the desaturated look, muted colors and popping contrast we had in mind from the very beginning.
  4. Testing and testing again. With the chemistry figured out, we then had to test the film (shooting) to make sure the look met our expectations. From the very first test, the look matched the one we had in mind. However, we continued to test it in a range of light conditions and environments and kept improving the formula to adjust minor details.
  5. A Brand New Film: Welcome to Metropolis. Before we could announce our creation to the world we needed to be sure other photographers were as excited as us. We secretly sent a small number of hand spooled rolls to testers around the world. Following their feedback, we have finally perfected the formula, and are ready to open Metropolis’ doors to the world.

What the Film Community Thinks

“The new LomoChrome Metropolis definitely doesn’t look like anything I’ve seen before (…) having this new film would just open up a lot of different approaches to film photography and what people are shooting.”
— Lauren Roche (founder of People’s Crit)

“The New Lomochrome Metropolis looks really cool, its very desaturated, high contrast, very film noir, but with a tiny drop of color.”
— Nick Collingwood (photographer and filmmaker)

“I loved how the skin looks and matches with the background.”
— Lidybel Aguila (photographer)

“I think it’s beautiful. It’s a very diffused color palette, with very high contrast, certain colors really pop.”
— Kyle Depew (Brooklyn Film Camera)

“A different take on what color photography could be represented as.”
— Zach Ruben (street photographer)

Welcome to Metropolis

#nofilter Needed for Great Results

Fight back against the flood of fake imagery, staged vacation shots, carefully curated spontaneity, countless selfies and empty images – devoid of meaning, love and sincerity. Take a deep breath and go back to the basics with film photography. Learn anew the feeling of surprise and uncertainty, build true connections with your subjects and realize the true value of images. LomoChrome Metropolis pays homage to the mother of all colors: black! Search for rays of color in a sea of lightless skyscrapers, frame your subject as they trudge the streets of ghost towns, and disappear down sparsely lit subway entrances – embrace urban annihilation and take portraits unlike anything else. And if you happen to find yourself lost in nature: capture shaggy sheep in the Scottish Highlands, dawn creeping along the Mekong, or weathered wildebeest skeletons by the gates of Windhoek. Inspired by stark images of expressionism and modern urbanism, LomoChrome Metropolis is the newest flavor in film photography – bringing the fresh taste of adventure to analog artists around the globe – standing proud where megapixels and software matter no more.

One Film, Four Formats

LomoChrome Metropolis will be available in 35 mm (bulk rolls of 35 mm will be also available to DIY your own rolls for very special analog art works), 120 (medium format), 110 (pocket film) and likely 16 mm (motion picture film). Please note again that we can only produce this format if we reach a minimum of 500 rolls backed for this pledge. We would also love to produce 35 mm motion picture film, but first we need to know if there’s any demand for it! If you would be interested please get in touch with us via comments or email.

Develop With Ease

Designed for the universal C-41 process, LomoChrome Metropolis can easily be developed at home or in nearly any photo lab. Regardless of what ISO you choose, the development process remains the same.

Unrivalled Photographic Flexibility

Like our iconic LomoChrome Purple, LomoChrome Metropolis features an extended 100-400 ISO range, meaning you can change sensitivity (by changing the ISO setting of your camera) to influence the intensity of the film’s character. From our experience, shooting in direct, natural sunlight really makes LomoChrome Metropolis shine whilst the true sharpness of this film reveals itself most of all in shade – where it shows its dramatic side. The warmer the shade the more likely to take on a yellow/green tingle. We’ve seen that shooting in inner city areas, street light and other urban light sources casts a strong green tinge over the scene – producing a truly unique image. Shots of bodies of water really impressed us, with a slight romantic tinge that makes them stand out from the rest. Due to the color shifting nature of the film, green on the other hand, is rendered far moodier and more foreboding. At Lomography we love to experiment and be surprised by unpredictable outcomes. LomoChrome Metropolis is the embodiment of our philosophy. Keep shooting and let our LomoChrome Metropolis do the magic!

Our Films in the Press

“Not only was the film exceeding my expectations with every shot, but the results were even better than I could have hoped. I think the phrase “over the moon” was used earnestly for the first time in my life.”
— Jeb Inge (Casual Photophile, talking about our Berlin Kino film)

“Lomography has a new flavor of film on the way, reconfirming what we already know, that it’s an awesome time to start shooting film.”
— Popular Photography (talking about our Berlin Kino film)

“Really, really sharp film. There is minimum grain there, it looks really good. I was really happy with that.”
— Matt Day (photographer, talking about our Potsdam Kino film)

“There’s so many companies nowadays discontinuing film, going out of business. When someone is learning film they make a lot of mistakes and film is an expense. So the fact that Lomography has this [color negative film] at such an affordable price and still great quality is very important. I gotta give Lomography credit for this and I hope that people support them by buying this, trying it. That way they can continue making it and keep film alive.”
— Raychristofer (talking about our Lomography Color Negative 100 film)

“A color negative film using C-41 development, that allows you to enjoy psychedelic purple color!”
— DC-Watch (talking about our LomoChrome Purple film)

Developing

LomoChrome Metropolis is designed for the universal C-41 process, the most common developing process for color film. Once you’re done shooting your masterpieces you can easily drop it off to any photo lab, including our network of LomoLabs.

Scanning and Digitizing your Negatives

Once you’ve developed your roll of negatives it’s time to get scanning. Most photo labs provide scanning services, but if you want to try it out yourself we recommend our Digitaliza film masks available for 35 mm, 120 and 110 film formats (available as an add-on). Other options include simply using your flatbed scanner or digital camera to easily create high-quality scans. Have a look at the Lomography Magazine to learn more about scanning at home.

What the Hell is Lomography?

Established in 1992 by a group of footloose Viennese students, the Lomographic Society International is photography’s wild child. Fuelled by fiery passion and burning curiosity, we blasted off our free-spirited movement when we stumbled across the Lomo LC-A, the most popular Russian camera of the 1980s, now famed for its quirky aesthetic. We wasted no time at all and created our Ten Golden Rules, and we’ve dutifully followed them ever since. Today, with over 1 million creative members, Lomography is a license to let loose; an invitation to ignite your inspiration, and a platform to catapult your shots around the globe. Whether you’re a complete novice or a seasoned pro, we believe that you harness the power to create something incredible. From crazy color-shifting film to bespoke Art Lenses, innovative instants to classic analog cameras we’re dedicated to designing and producing all the photographic tools you need.

Risks & Challenges

We’re proud to have successfully funded and completed ten ambitious Kickstarter projects. We’re working hard to bring the LomoChrome Metropolis to life, but we’re aware that there’s always an element of risk involved in these kinds of projects. The first shipment is scheduled to go out in January.. Although we work closely with our manufacturers to ensure everything runs smoothly, unexpected delays in production and delivery can occur. We promise to keep you informed every step of the way. We’re so excited to be back on Kickstarter. We hope you’ll join us in making the new LomoChrome Metropolis a reality!

Do I have to pay import fees for my shipment?
We will be distributing your pledge packages from shipping hubs in the EU, USA, Japan, and Hong Kong. As a result, backers from these regions will not have to pay additional import fees. We will ship packages to backers in South America, Africa and the rest of the world with TNT. TNT declares the goods and customs checks TNT’s declaration. The amount of tax you will have to pay will be calculated based on this declaration and varies from country to country. The value, product type and shipping method are all factors which will determine the amount of tax you will have to pay. On top of this tax, TNT will charge you “Customs Administration Costs” to pay for processing the clearance of imported goods. Please note that these fees are not included in the Kickstarter Shipping fees listed on this page! We are organizing shipment into Turkey through our local distributors. This means that there will be no import taxes on parcels to this area, but also that longer shipping times are to be expected.

What additional sales tax will there be for the USA and how should I pay them?
Due to the recent ruling of the US supreme court to allow states to collect sales taxes for online shipments to the different states. As per these new regulations backers residing in New York, Pennsylvania & Washington are required by state law to pay a small taxation fee on their pledge. State and City Sales taxes will be collected after the campaign. An additional payment will be necessary before we can ship our items. We ́ll send you a personalized link for this shortly before we start shipping out!

When and how do you collect the shipping information?
We’ll ask for your shipping information in a survey which is sent out after the Kickstarter campaign ends. We may send out this survey closer to the date that we begin shipping, rather than straight after the campaign in order to minimize the chance of backers changing their address between the survey being filled in and the films being shipped. So please don’t worry if you don’t receive your survey immediately after the campaign ends!

Can you indicate zero amount or lower value when shipping to me? I would like to avoid high customs costs.
We’re sorry, but we can’t declare your package as zero value or a gift with a donation as customs requires that this product be valued with a price. Please check the import duty fees with your local customs office as we cannot handle these types of fees.

My payment was declined but I want to be a part of this campaign. Is there any other way I can make my payment?
Normally we can only collect money through Kickstarter. If your payment has been declined, please try registering an alternative credit card to your Kickstarter account. If this doesn’t work, please contact us via direct message and we’ll help you find a solution.

Can I pay via PayPal?
This is not possible since Kickstarter only works with Stripe payments. If you are having persistent problems with payment, please send us a private message and we’ll do our best to help you sort out the issue.

When will my card be charged with my pledge amount?
You will only be charged once the LomoChrome Metropolis is successfully funded at the end of the campaign.

What is the planned retail price for the LomoChrome Metropolis?
The currently planned retail prices are as follows. Please note that due to changes in the production or package assembly the prices can still be updated. Both 35 mm and 120 will cost 12.90 USD and the 110 format will cost 7.90 USD. You can save up to 25% on Kickstarter compared to the final retail price!

You’ll be able to see a summary of what you’ve already paid for, along with a row of special deals to add exciting extras to your pledge!

What are the Kickstarter Special, Super Early Bird and Early Bird deals?

You can find the estimated delivery for each reward package in the reward text!

Can you give me more info on the rewards including a Trip?
We had such a great time with our Kickstarter backers who came to visit us in Vienna as part of their rewards from our previous Kickstarter projects, and we can’t wait to meet some of you for another legendary week! We want to offer an authentic Lomography experience. That’s why our travel reward is a trip to the Lomography HQ in Vienna! During the five days, you’ll spend with us, you’ll be staying in a hotel in the heart of the city. We’ll even take you on an exclusive mystery trip, as well! The trip is planned for May 2020 and covers the following expenses for one person (extra costs would apply for additional people): accommodation for five days, plus meals and drinks for two days. You would cover your own flights and other expenses. If you cannot make the date, we’re happy to arrange for you to visit Vienna another time. However, the dates for any special events we organize are fixed. If you have any questions at all about the trip, please message us! If you would like to bring additional people, this can be arranged but will involve extra costs (which would be organized before you come to Vienna).

How do I send a private message?
It’s super simple to drop us a message – all you have to do is click on the “Contact” button at the top of our main project page (just under the green “Back This Project” button).

How can I add add-ons to my pledge?
Choose an add-on by simply adding the amount specified for each of your chosen items to your pledge. For example, if you’d like to add a DigitaLIZA 35 mm Scanning Mask to your pledge, just increase the amount you’ve pledged for 30 USD.

Can I add add-ons to my pledge after the campaign has ended or when you send me my survey?
Once the campaign has ended you cannot add to your pledge. We will however send you a list of special offers where you’ll have the opportunity to purchase additional items in a special backer deal!

Will the 16 mm film be available regardless of the pledge number? Will it be available for purchase also after the campaign ends?
To make 16 mm Lomochrome Metropolis film a reality we need to achieve 500 Kickstarter pledges. If the total number of 16 mm film backers fails to reach 500, every person who backed this tier will have a choice: be refunded, or choose other rolls of film.

What is the difference between the LomoChrome Metropolis and other films?
Apart from being the newest color negative film emulsion on the market, LomoChrome Metropolis is also the most unique. It produces extraordinary colour results, unlike any other film you have ever seen. The best thing about it you don’t need additional filters to achieve that washed out, bleached look-it’s all completely genuine! Using the most common C41 processing, it will be possible to develop it in every photo lab as well. On top of it, it is the only film on the market, available in not only 35 mm and 120 but also in 110 and in 16 mm formats.

Do I need to use additional filters to get these effects?
No additional filters are needed to get these effects: they are produced totally naturally.

How and where do I develop LomoChrome Metropolis film?
LomoChrome Metropolis is developed using C-41 chemicals. Any reasonably priced labs and even some drugstores in your area should be able to process, scan, and print any size images from 35 mm film. 110 and 120 (or medium format) films will require the use of a professional photo lab. You can find a film lab in your area using a simple online search, scouring your local phone-book, and there are even mail order labs!

How many exposures does each roll of LomoChrome Metropolis film produce?
Each roll of 35 mm LomoChrome Metropolis produces 36 exposures when using a regular 35 mm camera. A 120 film roll will usually give you 9-16 exposures, depending on the camera and a 110 film cartridge 24 exposures.

Is it possible to order fewer than 5 rolls?
Unfortunately not. At the moment, it is only possible to order 5 rolls or more.

Is Lomochrome Metropolis film DX coded?
No, the film cartridges do not have a DX code.

Can Lomochrome Metropolis be used in other, non-Lomography cameras as well?
Yes, the film can be used with all kinds of analogue cameras available today. We offer the film in 35 mm, 120 and 110 formats as well.
